Frequently Asked Questions
1
What can counselling help with?
Counselling can help with a wide range of emotional and psychological difficulties, including anxiety, stress, depression, bereavement, trauma, relationship challenges, workplace difficulties, low self-esteem, and feelings of overwhelm or being stuck.
2
What happens in the first session?
The first session is an opportunity for us to begin getting to know each other. We will talk about what has brought you to therapy, what support you are looking for, and any questions or concerns you may have.
There is no pressure to share everything straight away. We work at a pace that feels comfortable for you.
3
Do I need to prepare anything before starting therapy?
No preparation is needed. Many people feel unsure or anxious before their first session, which is completely normal. You only need to come as you are.
4
How long are sessions?
Sessions are usually 50 minutes long, although longer sessions can sometimes be arranged where appropriate and agreed together.
5
Do you offer online counselling?
Yes. I offer face-to-face, online, and telephone counselling sessions.
6
Where are you based?
I am based in Gomersal, Cleckheaton, West Yorkshire, with easy access from Bradford, Leeds, Huddersfield, and Wakefield.
7
How many sessions will I need?
This varies from person to person. Some clients come for short-term support around a specific issue, while others find longer-term therapy more helpful. Our arrangement is session by session, and you have the right to end your sessions at any time. We will check in regularly about how therapy is feeling and whether it continues to be helpful for you. I encourage your feedback on the counselling relationship at any point during our time together.
8
Is counselling confidential?
Yes. Everything discussed within therapy is confidential, with a few legal and ethical exceptions which will be explained clearly during our work together. I work within the BACP and NCPS Ethical Framework (available upon request), including regular supervision.
9
What if I feel nervous about reaching out?
Many people feel nervous before contacting a counsellor, especially if they have never had therapy before.
You do not need to have everything figured out before getting in touch.
Sometimes the first step is simply having a conversation.
